Becoming a Digital Nomad in Costa Rica: the Pros and Cons

6/27/2024

Become a Digital Nomad in Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s digital nomad visa program offers an exciting opportunity for remote workers to experience the “pura vida” lifestyle. Foreign residents can work remotely while experiencing the laid-back lifestyle of Costa Rica. This program allows individuals to extend their 90-day tourist visa to a full year, with the possibility of renewing for an additional year.  As part of the program, digital nomads are exempt from paying income tax and have access to other benefits such as being able to open a local bank account and validating their driver's license from their home country.

Here are the key requirements:

Proof of Income:
  1. You must demonstrate a stable net income of at least $3,000 per month.
  2. For families, the income requirement is $5,000 per month.
Employment Relationship:
  1. You should have an employment relationship with an entity outside of Costa Rica.
  2. Working for a Costa Rican company is not allowed.
Valid Passport:
  1. Ensure your passport remains valid for the entire visa duration.
  2. Health Insurance:
  3. Mandatory medical insurance must cover you throughout your stay.
Fees:
The digital nomad visa requires a one-time application fee of $100 and a registration fee of $902.

Overall, obtaining the visa is relatively straightforward if you meet the income criteria and have the necessary documentation, and there are numerous attorneys that offer the filing of this paperwork as a legal service.

As a digital nomad, Costa Rica offers a mix of enticing advantages and potential challenges. Let’s dive into the pros and cons:

Pros:
  1. Pleasant, Warm Weather Year-Round: Costa Rica boasts a tropical climate with consistent temperatures ranging from the low to high 20s. Whether you prefer beaches or lush greenery, the weather won’t disappoint.
  2. Mesmerizing Beaches: With some of the world’s most breathtaking beaches, Costa Rica is a surfer’s paradise. Picture yourself working with the sound of crashing waves in the background!
  3. Lush Greenery: Beyond the beaches, the country offers abundant forests, parks, and natural beauty. Perfect for nature-loving digital nomads.
  4. Diverse, Traditional Cuisine: Foodies will appreciate Costa Rica’s classic Spanish dishes and culinary variety.
  5. Diverse Culture: Immerse yourself in a rich cultural tapestry, from local traditions to expat communities.
  6. High Happiness Index Ranking: Costa Rica consistently ranks among the happiest countries globally.
  7. Nearby to the US/Canada: Convenient for North American travelers.
Cons:
  1. Living Cost Relatively Higher: Compared to neighboring Central American countries, Costa Rica’s cost of living can be steep.
  2. Crime Rates: While lower than in some neighboring countries, crime rates are relatively high. Petty theft, property crime, and drug trafficking require vigilance, especially in urban areas.
  3. Internet Facilities Vary: Some remote parts lack strong Wi-Fi, so digital nomads must research providers and consider urban locations.
  4. Natural Disaster Risk: Costa Rica sits on a fault line, making it prone to tsunamis, earthquakes, tropical storms, and volcanic eruptions.
In summary, Costa Rica offers a tropical haven with vibrant culture, but it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons before making the leap. Remember, despite the challenges, it’s Latin America’s happiest country!
